Phoebe Babcock Waite
Emboldened with the dream of furthering her education and working in the medical field, Phoebe Babcock Waite attended the New York Medical College and Hospital for Women several years after graduating from Alfred University. She earned her medical degree while married and raising three children, and following her graduation, she became a professor and dean at the New York College and Hospital for Women. Dr. Waite additionally had a medical practice of her own which specialized in obstetrics and ears and throat conditions.
After retiring from her practice, she remained interested and invested in the march of medical progress, and she further encouraged women to earn medical degrees and work after marriage. She was also a suffragist and devoted to numerous social causes, many of which she discussed in her writings and speeches.
